There’s a petition in the works for the Honourable John McCallum, Minister of Immigration to “eliminate Section 38(1)(c) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, for discriminating against people with disabilities, in contravention of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and other Canadian laws and International Treaties, and for its destructive social and economic repercussions.” I wrote about Montoya family case back in March. The family has been in Canada since 2012; Dad is a tenured professor at York University; mom is a dance instructor, the two kids are in school. They’re now on the verge of deportation because 13-year-old son Nico has Down syndrome. Their situaton has sparked this petition.
